The biggest question I get is "So who are the leaders in Video Call technology?".  A few years ago I couldn't tell you, but today there are clear leaders in the Personal Video Conferencing and Video Call space.  Now keep in mind we would not recommend any solution that exposes you or your family to adult related content.  The solutions we recommend are ones that have the ability to control privacy and security and provides you high quality audio and video so that your video call experience is as good as it can be.

Software:

Skype by far is the defacto standard in Personal Video Calls.  Oprah uses it, News casts use it, Comedian Tom Green uses it and of course I use and recommend it over any and all other Video Call software solutions.  It works on Windows, Apple and Linux systems.

Webcams:

Logitech is the "clear" (yes, pun intended) winner for webcams.  Logitech webcams lens quality, image quality, lighting and sound quality of best of all the software capabilities is what makes Logitech webcams the best you can buy.  I always tell people "a webcam is to Video Calls as is a High Speed Internet connection is to surfing the web".  Once you use one, you will understand and never use a modem or cheap webcam ever again.
